The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to introduce several changes in the pattern of English and Mathematics examinations for Class X from 2020.
CBSE has called the upcoming move 'learner-centric,' and it hopes to decrease the burden of the students.
While the notice is currently available to the affiliated schools only, it will be out for the general public soon.
CBSE to introduce two-leveled examination worth 20 and 80 marks
According to the new changes, the exam will take place in two-levels instead of a single exam of 100 marks, which has been the format until now.
The schools will conduct an internal examination worth 20 marks, and it will determine who will be allowed to take the written exam.
From 2020, the external/common exam conducted by CBSE will be of 80 marks.
Students can choose difficulty level for Mathematics paper
Moreover, the students who will not clear the internal exam will not be allowed to sit for the external one.
Although the changes announced by the Board are both for English and Mathematics, students will see a considerable change in Mathematics paper, which is yet to be introduced.
Notably, students will be also get to choose the difficulty level of their Mathematics paper.
Students choosing easier version cannot opt for Mathematics in higher-studies
After the changes, Mathematics subject, comprising the current syllabus will be called Mathematics-standard, while its easier version will be called Mathematics-basic. However, the catch here is that the students who opt for the easier version will not be allowed to take Mathematics in higher studies.
CBSE had earlier announced creative writing be given marks
Earlier this year, the Board also announced creative writing will be given marks.
CBSE spokesperson had said, "Students are habituated to writing as written in the textbooks. It is important that they develop their own writing style and not mere reproduce what the books say."
"Thus, we have issued instructions to give consideration to students who adopt their own writing style," he added.
CBSE has instructed schools to reserve two periods/week for arts
Among the other decisions that go beyond textbook education, the Board has also made Arts education mandatory for all the students from Class I to Class XII.
The schools have been instructed to dedicate at least two periods each week for the same.
The period will have to include all the streams covered under art, i.e., music, dance, visual arts, and theater.
